This past week, the GBC Missions Committee received an urgent message from Steve and Mary Hawthorne who are involved in medical missions in Bolivia. Recently, they arrived back in Bolivia where they were to meet a couple coming to join them in the medical clinic in Potosi. When the couple arrived, they had lost important medical and bank cards from their luggage. This loss is part of a history of multiple obstacles that they have endured as they have sought to follow God’s leading to work in Bolivia, e.g. the Potosi blockades this summer that shut down the city, surgery for their infant son, delayed renewal of visas, and now lost documents. These obstacles have caused them to ask, “Is Potosi the place where God wants us to be?” Steve asks for specific prayer for this couple because he saw them as God’s provision and backup at the medical clinic as the Hawthornes move to reach out to the silver miners on the outskirts of Potosi. Also pray that they can find suitable rental housing in Potosi ... the places they have looked at have no central heat, poor insulation, no hot water...and even these places seem “overpriced”. Pray that they would have God’s understanding and encouragement for the Hawthornes and their co-workers as they share the good news of Jesus in this harsh environment.
Pray using the words of Paul... “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” [Ephesians 6:10,11]
