In our culture the accepted adage is: “I don’t get mad, I get even”, but Jesus said: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” So who are our enemies and what does it mean to love them and how is that possible? Matthew 5:20-44 The context for loving your enemies starts with six statements that contrast the righteousness of the Pharisees “you have heard” with the righteous that God expects: “but I say to you”. This is an impossible standard of righteousness if attemted under our own power but it is a joyful way of life if we trust in God and receive His power.
