We continue our Matthew studies by looking at the three seemingly unrelated (but connected) “events” (Matthew 14) that follow on from Jesus’ “kingdom stories” (aka parables of Matthew 13). Matthew uses each of these events to compare and contrast Jesus’ kingship and kingdom with the “others” of that age and of ours. Please use the readings and questions to prepare for our study. Matthew 14:1-5 This event is told by way of a “flashback”. What prompts Herod’s analysis in v. 2? What had John done that prompted his arrest and detention? Where do we need to point out the unlawful or immoral behaviors of our leaders…in our age?
