This morning Jephthe, Mitou, Dominick, and Abel Lucien are visiting us. Jephthe is the President of Jerusalem Baptist Missions of Haiti. Mitou is a devoted wife, mother, and administrator in JBM’s ministries. Dominick and Abel attend an English-speaking school in the northern city of Cap Haitian.
JBM is a group of about 120 churches spread throughout Haiti but located primarily in the Centre and Nord departments (states). Many of the churches are in rural areas where the economic conditions are challenging. They are Bible-based, Christ-centered, and evangelical in their ministry. In addition to spiritual care, JBM is very concerned with the everyday hardships of their members.
For six years GBC has been one of several United States churches partnering with JBM. We have helped establish a permanent medical clinic in Pignon and financially support the doctor and nurse who work in it. We have helped bring dlo (water) to several communities by drilling wells and most recently through the distribution of water filters, as potable water is a critical need in Haiti. We have helped build ministry buildings, including the church and community center in Wangouman. We have helped bring Biblical teaching to the pastors, many of whom have little formal training, by sponsoring a leadership conference for the past five years.
As we look to the future, our plan is to continue our support of JBM. In November, a team from GBC will travel to Haiti to build pews for the church in Wangouman, help with a two-day conference, and conduct a number of mobile medical clinics. We are investigating ways that we might help support an orphanage in the village of Lacaste.
Take time this morning to welcome the Luciens and pray that God will “go ahead” of all our support of the JBM ministries.
