Last week the Missions Highlight encouraged prayer for the Navajo Summer Vision Team. This morning, that team is worshipping at the Good News Church in Houck, Arizona and preparing for their week of ministry.
Another group is heading out today. This time it’s the middle school WorkCampNE team. A GBC Elder, Dave Mewha, and a junior at Grove City College, Will Baldwin, are leading the team of seven middle school guys. Starting tonight, the team will be housed at Springfield High School in Springfield, Vermont. Once they are “comfortably” settled on the floor of a classroom and get their air mattresses inflated, they will have supper and an enthusiastic time of worship.
On Monday morning, the GBC team will divide and join several other groups. After devotions and breakfast, they’ll head out for their first day of service. Some will paint. Others will work on roofing or complete small construction projects like building handicap ramps. Whatever the “client” needs, that’s the job!
Each day is filled with hard work, mixed with laughter and devotional time. Throughout, our middle schoolers will get to know their clients who need support because of age, health, or economics. If history repeats itself, getting to know their clients is one of the richest experiences of the entire week.
This daily pattern continues until Thursday night when all the clients are invited to supper at the high school to eat with their students. During the evening the Gospel message is shared with everyone there.
Friday is half work and half play, followed by an evening wrap up session. The team returns home on Saturday.
As these middle and high schoolers put their faith into action in Vermont and Arizona, let’s remember to be faithful in our prayer for them.
