In July GBC will be sending two teams to serve with workcampNE. From July 2-8, the middle school team will be in Springfield, VT and from July 16-22 the high school team will descend on Alton, NH.
The goal of workcampNE is to impact lives for Christ by bringing students closer to Jesus and serving families through free home repairs. Their summer ministry reaches out to the elderly and disenfranchised families in a community, who for a variety of reasons, are unable to keep up with home maintenance. A workcampNE team of adults and students spends the week sprucing up the home. Typical care involves painting, roofing, and basic carpentry repair. For example, it is not unusual for a team to build a handicap ramp for a wheelchair bound client.
Our students work hard, learning the use of paintbrushes and hand power tools. They learn the value of working as a team to accomplish a task, and they see the result of their work each day. They have the opportunity to serve “the least of these.” They better understand the heart of Jesus as they use their hands.
Daily, team members spend time in personal devotions and have focused group devotions on the job site. At night, there is a “high energy” worship time filled with enthusiastic singing and a challenging spiritual message.
Community members get to see youth reaching out to those who need support. Often our students have the opportunity to befriend their clients who are deeply encouraged. At the end of each week, clients are invited to a dinner and are given the opportunity to hear a clear presentation of the gospel.
As our teams prepare for this adventure, let’s pray they will have open hearts to allow God to bring them closer to Him.
