We return this week to our series “God Restoring the World”, as we make our way through the book of Isaiah. Isaiah means- “The salvation of Jehovah” and is a book detailing how God intends to put all to right. It’s a book that has been called “The Gospel according to Isaiah” and “the 5th Gospel”, because it seems to be broken up in a similar manner to the larger Scriptures, of which it is itself of course a part. Also similar, the first roughly two thirds of the book focus on God’s justice and His judgment toward His wayward people, while the latter third details a hopeful plan for the redemption for His people through the coming and intervention of His “Servant”, whom we know to be our Lord Jesus Christ.
We begin by summarizing a section of four chapters of judgment, chapters 13-16, that are the first chunk of a larger set of judgments against Judah’s enemies. These chapter’s (13-23) are known as the prophetic “burdens” of Isaiah, and in this first section there are oracles against Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, and Moab.
