The Ideal Servant
Read - Isaiah 49:1-4
The first four verses reveal the call of the Servant, who is given a message, depicted by the sword and arrow imagery, and who would seemingly fail, or be rejected, but entrusts Himself completely to God. The transitional Jewish understanding is that this passage is about national Israel, and not about an individual at all, while we would certainly attribute these verses to Jesus. Looking ahead to verse 5, how do we know that this messianic Servant was someone sent to Israel, not Israel herself? How is Jesus the ideal Israel?
