Evil scrawls itself across the top lines of our news networks. Shootings, beheading, betrayal, extortion and greed, drugs, immorality; around the world … along with the daily reports on war and terror, famine, floods, ethnic cleansings, kidnappings, imprisonments, and daily, persecution against Christians. All these point to the world’s need of a Savior… not just from evil without but the evils that plague us within. Jesus came from heaven to be our “sin-bearer.” Matthew says this about Him, “Jesus went through all the towns…teaching… proclaiming the good news of the kingdom…When he saw the crowds, he felt deep concern for them. They were beaten down and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is huge. But there are only a few workers. So ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers out into his harvest field.” [Matthew 9:35-38] His model becomes ours for being and enabling “workers” in His harvest field.
May we use the resources of heaven as we respond to global evil. Specifically, let’s covenant together to spend time each day asking the Lord of the harvest to use us and to send out workers in response to the reports of evil and opportunity. Let’s respond personally to Jesus as “sent workers” in our own families, neighborhoods, towns and businesses.
And let’s continue to pray for missionaries in lands where there is no Christian culture, that God will give boldness and words to proclaim the name of Jesus without fear. As we spend time with God each day in His Word and talk with Him, may we use these same Scriptures to motivate our prayers and instill within us a passion for His world…His people…His salvation plan.
